Mount Nebo Scenic Byway

We took our friend advice and drove the Mount Nebo Scenic Byway to look for fall colors.

We first stopped by a visitor in the city of Payson called Peteneet School to gather some information about the drive and got more than we bargained for in a good way. I could not find much information on the web to describe this buillding in more detail, but the folks there were certainly friendly and helpful. It used to be a school, eventually converted to a visitor center and an activity center where people can rent rooms for meetings or events such as wedding. A lady proudly showed us the collection of collectibles, including those donated by Lee Staheli who was a local famous horse wrangler.

Mount Nebo Scenic Drive started out on an iffy note with a downpour. The weather got somewhat better during the drive with periods of sunshine, rain, fog and hail, making it interesting from the photographic perspective albeit hazadous driving conditions. Having gone to California's Eastern Sierra, Plumas County, Burney Falls/Shasta regions in past years, the Mount Nebo drive was among the top for me, both for close-ups of maples, oaks, aspens as well as for the grand vistas. We did not stray too far from the road so mostly got views of the forest, a couple of small creeks, valleys, and mountains. I suspect venturing into trails would lead to other vistas such as lakeshores, ponds, etc. If one has a day to spare while visiting SLC, this would be a highly recommended drive.
